Central Taiwan

Bounded by the densely populated cities of the north, and the lush tropical plains of the south, central Taiwan is a region principally defined by mountains: the mighty central ranges contain a vast array of tantalizing landscapes, from the mesmerizing beauty of Sun Moon Lake to the awe-inspiring peak of Yushan, northeast Asia’s tallest mountain.

-Taichung, one of the most dynamic cities in the country and gateway to the region, Taiwan’s third-largest city, noted for its innovative teahouses and vibrant nightlife.

South Taiwan

The southern plains are home to Taiwan’s oldest Chinese settlements, a bastion of Taiwanese culture with a correspondingly high proportion of independence supporters – the counties of Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingdong, the Taiwanese language is spoken everywhere in preference to Mandarin. Languid, tropical south Taiwan is a world away from Taipei, a land of betel nut plantations, pineapple groves and sandy beaches.

The East Coast

The region is visibly marked by ethnic diversity, with Taiwan’s densest concentration of indigenous peoples: seven officially recognized tribes are represented here, and their relative isolation has enabled them to preserve many of their traditional beliefs, languages and practices. The stretch between the cities of Hualien and Taitung is the heartland of the Ami, and scattered throughout are villages of the Atayal, Bunun, Paiwan, Puyuma, Rukai, Sakizaya and Tao people. Visiting the area during a festival period – the busiest of which is in July and August – gives a fascinating glimpse into a seldom seen side of Taiwan.

The Taiwan Strait Islands

The Taiwan Strait Islands, sprinkled across the windswept channel that separates Taiwan from the People’s Republic of China, hold endless fascination for travellers and Chinese history buffs.

-The Penghu Islands 澎湖群島, closest to the main island of Taiwan, the Penghu Archipelago is littered with ruins from the Dutch colonial period as well as successive Chinese regimes, and boasts some of Asia’s most magnificent golden-sand beaches and unspoilt coral reefs.

-Kinmen 金門, home to an impressive concentration of historic structures

-The Matsu Islands 馬祖列島, are second only to Kinmen in their proximity to the PRC, the archipelago comprises nineteen islands and islets, only six of them are accessible to tourists, each with a distinct flavour and appeal.

Transportations

By Rail

All major cities and towns in Taiwan are connected by the efficient Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) network of local and express trains, though travel in Taiwan was revolutionized with the opening of the separately managed High Speed Rail in 2007.

High Speed Rail features a bullet train that has cut the travelling times between Taipei and Kaohsiung by two thirds. The train, one of the world’s fastest, stops at eight stations along a 345-kilometre track travelling at an average speed of about 300kmph.

By Air

Flights between the major cities in Taiwan have been dramatically cut back. Unless you’re in a real hurry, flying isn’t a great deal unless heading to Taiwan’s outlying islands (particularly Kinmen, Matsu and Lanyu), when you’ll save a lot of time by taking a plane.

By Bus

Buses are generally cheaper than trains, and, with the exception of the High Speed Rail, can be much faster – provided you travel when traffic is light and there are no road accidents.

By Car

In more remote areas such as the cross-island highway routes and segments of the east coast, hiring a car can be the most convenient way to get around.

Cycling

The use of bicycles for short rides and day-trips is becoming increasingly common in many tourist destinations, with designated cycle paths cropping up all over the country.

While cycle touring is gaining popularity, this is largely (and wisely) contained to the quieter areas of the east coast as well as the more challenging cross-island highway routes over the mountains.

By Boat

There are regular passenger ferries to Taiwan’s outlying islands, although in winter many services are scaled back. Ludao (Green Island) and Lanyu (Orchid Island) are easily reached by ferry in good weather, while the Taiwan Strait islands of Little Liuqiu, Kinmen, the Matsu Archipelago and the Penghu Archipelago are accessible by ferry for much of the year.

By Scooter

The humble scooter remains the transport of choice in Taiwan, and is certainly the most convenient way to explore smaller cities and far-flung areas with little or no public transport.

Climate

The island state of Taiwan has a subtropical monsoon climate, with wet, humid summers and short, relatively mild winters. Taiwan has two rainy seasons that arrive at different times of the year and affect different areas. The southern part of the island is the first to experience the monsoon, with heavy rains hitting between May and September. Monsoon rains then move onto the north and northeast.
